In the center of the traffic circle, the Rond Point Walter Oliver St John. Monument A bronze plaque and a stone stele with a plaque honoring 2nd Lieutenant Walter Oliver St John who died in a crash close to Nimes.


On August 20, 1944, after unsuccessfully bombing bridges in Remoulins, the 94th Fighter Squadron of the 1st Fighter Group found a Germany convoy and attacked.  Second Lieutenant Walter Oliver St. John's plane was hit by enemy fire and he jumped from the plane.  The body was never found.  The stele and plaque was inaugurated on August 25, 2004, the sixtieth anniversary of the liberation of the city.

who gave his life near Nimes on August 20, 1944.

May this celebration in August 2004 reaffirm the

long existing bonds of friendship between our two

countries.
