Le Croisic U.S. Navy Seaplane Squadron Plaque

<< Back to Le Croisic

Details:

On the façade of the building.

Plaque

A white stone tablet, engraved with a commemoration message that is written in French in engraved and red lettering. It recalls the event when the facilities of the first US Navy operational squadron were turned over to the US Navy. The United States Navy established a naval air station on 27 November 1917 to operate seaplanes during World War I. The U.S. Navy pilots in France operated for the first time at Le Croisic on November 13th, 1917; their last mission at sea took place off Brest-Camaret on December 13th, 1918. During these thirteen months of activity, the 150 American pilots of the U.S. Navy carried out a thousand sorties, flushed out 27 submarines, attacked 25 of them, bombed and damaged 12, and probably sank four or five. These results are added to those of French maritime aviation: the 580 active French pilots carried out 7,893 sorties in 1917, destroying thirty German submarines.
