362nd Infantry, 91st Division Plaque

<< Back to Gesnes Church

Details:

On the outside wall of the church, at the front north corner. Plaque

A small bronze plaque with English text is mounted on the church wall and honors the 362nd Infantry Regiment and their advance here on 29 September 1918.

On September 29, the 362nd U.S. Infantry Regiment liberated Gesnes. A soldier of this regiment, Henry Boyd, immortalized this exploit with a plaque affixed to the wall of the church. However as the Regiment was too advanced, they had to fall back to recapture Gesnes definitively on October 5, 1918, but Gesnes will remain under German bombardment until the beginning of November 1918 and will be completely destroyed.

Monument Text:

The 362nd US Infantry during the great offensive which began September 26, 1918 took Gesnes and the ridge beyond on September 29, 1918 and were the first troops to reach the American Army objective. In spite of severe losses this Regiment held the ground gained until ordered to withdraw by higher authority because it was so far in advance of the troops on its right and left.
