Isolated Burial

The civilian marble gravestone gravesite of Sergeant Joseph Florey USAAF; includes a inscribed metal plaque.

Joseph Flory had finished 3 years of High School in California and was working as an elevator operator in a public building in Oakland, CA in 1940. According to NARA WWII Enlistment records, he re-enlisted in the Air Corps as a Sergeant in July 1943 and was sent overseas. Assigned to the 407th Bomber Squadron, 92nd Bomb Group  he was serving as Left Waist Gunner on B-17 #42-30726 ** when it was shot down ( Joachim Gutmann of JG26 near Wurburg, Germany) on the 14 October 1943 "Black Thursday" mission to Schweinfurt. Killed in Action (KIA).

Killed in Action 14 October 1943 at Kenbach near Wurzburg, Germany back from a mission to  Schweinfurt.
