At 3:35 a.m. on 6 June 1918, Marines and their French allies began an attack to seize Hill 142, a small hill which dominated the town of Torcy. The attack began along an 800 yard frontage with 1st Battalion 5th Marines on the 4th Marine Brigade left flank and 3rd Battalion 5th Marines on the right flank. As the attack developed, gaps in the allied lines began to form. 1st Battalion 5th Marines soon found its flanks machine gun emplacements. Overcoming daunting casualties, the battalion reached its objective at 7:00 a. m. Throughout the remainder of the day, German forces attempted numerous counterattacks. The Marines repelled these assaults, held their positions and set the stage for one of the U.S. Marine Corps most fiercely fought battles.

Sur un front de 800 metres se trouvaient au coude a coude le ler Batallion du 5eme Regiment, sur le flanc gauche, et 3eme Batallion du 5eme Regiment sur le flanc droit de la Brigade des Marines. Dans le courant d l'attaque, des trous se formerent dans les lignes alliees. Le ler Batallion du 5eme Regiment vit bientot son flanc expose aux allemands et essuya un feu intense des nids de mitrailleuses. Surmontant des pertes enormes, le batallion atteignit son objectif a 7h00. Le restant de la journee se passa a repousser les nombreuses contre-artaques allemandes, a tenir les positions et a prendre les marques d'une des bastilles les plus ardentes de l'US Marine Corps. At noon on 6 June, 1918 orders  were issued to the Marines to seize the town of Bouresches and to establish a foothold in the Southern portion of Belleau Wood. At 5:00 p.m. the 6^th Marines began to move 400 yards through a waist-high wheat field. Once exposed, the German machine guns started firing into the Marine lines. Despite horrendous casualties, the 6^th Marines captured Bouresches and a small portion of the Southern part of Belleau Wood. This action along with the capture of Hill 142, set the stage for one of the most fiercely fought battles in U.S. Marine Corps history.

Le 6 Juin 1918 á midi, les Marines recurent l’odre de s’emparer de la ville de Bouresches et de conquérir le secteur Sud de bois Belleau. A 5h00 le 6ème Régiment de Marines entama sa progression sur 400 m dans un champ de blé mur. Lorsqu’il fut á découvet, les mitrailleuses allemandes ouvrirent le feu. En dépit de pertes considérables, le 6éme Régiment de Marines captura Bouresches, et une petite partie du Bois de Belleau. Cette action, couplée avec celle de la cote 142, devait jalonner les contours de l’une des batailles les plus ardentes auquelles devait participer l’US Marine Corps dans son histoire.

The Mission for the 6^th Marines on 8 June 1918 was to seize the southern portion of Belleau Wood. Miscalculating the German strength in the southern portion of the wood and unsupported attack to seize their objective was repelled by the deeply entrenched Germans. Over the next 24 hours, they devised a plan that would use combined arms to take the objective. On 9 June Allied artillery shells struck German positions, but the barrage did not break the enemy resistance. At 4
:30 a.m. on 10 June, elements of the 5^th Marines and 6^th Marines launched its assault on the enemy positions in a complex converging attack, mounted from both south and west.

Le 3 juin 918 les Marines du 6eme Regiment recurrent pour mission de semparer de la partie Sud de Bois Belleau. Méséstimant le volume des forces allemandes dans cette portion du bois ils déclenchérent un assaut sans appul pour saisir leur objectif. Ce premier assaut fut repoussé par des allemands solidement retranchés. Les 24 heures suivantes permirent délaborer un plan d’emploi des armes combinées pour enlever l’objectif. A 4h30 le 10 juin des eléments du 6 éme Régiment de Marines appuyes directement par leur battallion de Mitrailleuses, ancerent l’ assaut. Après deux heures d’un combat intense et acharné, l’objectif était enlevé.

On 11 June 1918, elements of the 5^th Marines launched a pre-dawn attack into the western section of Belleau Wood in order to linkup with elements of the 6^th Marines. Unfortunately the plan did not survive the fog, friction, confusion and chaos of war. The Marines soon found themselves disoriented in the wood and exposed to heavy German rifle and machine fire. Despite heavy casualties, intense artillery fire and use of poison gas, they were able to reorganize and push the battle forward. The fighting broke down into a battle of platoons, then squads and finally to individuals as the Marines took the machine gun positions, one by one, by bayonet and hand-to-hand combat.

Le 11 juin 1918, des elements du 5éme Régiment de Marines lancérent avant l’aube un assaut dans la partie ouest de Bois de Belleau pour établir le conact avec le 6éme Régiment. Ce plan ne devait pas survivre á la brume a la tourmente a la confusion et au chaos des armes. Les Marines perdant tout repere furent exposés a un feu nourri des mitrailleuses et fussils allemands. En dépit de pertes énormes, d’un feu d’artillerie intense avec usage des gaz ils parvinrent á se réorganiser et reprendre la poussée. La bataille se désagrégea en un combat de sections de groupes et finalment d’homme á mitrailleuses, á la bayonette et au corps. Après des heures d’un combat acharmé le 5éme Régiment de Marines percait á la lisere Nord du bois.

On 23 June 1918, after a brief period of rest, the 4^th marine Brigade resumed its attack to capture the remaining parts of the Belleau Wood. At 7:00 p.m., the elements of the 5^th Marines began a frontal assault with four companies. Entrenched German infantry, supported by machine guns quickly repelled the assault. After five hours of fighting and 104 new casualties, the Marines found themselves back in their original attack postions. On 25 June, the Marines tried again. After a 14-hour artillery barrage, they crossed the line of departure. German resistance was strong but eventually crumbled under the ferocity of the Marine attack. On 26 June, the Commanding General of 2^nd Division received the news: “Belleau Wood now U. S. Marine entirely.” Belleau Wood would be eteched forever into U.S. Marine Corps history.

Le 23 juin 1918, après un court repos, la Brigade des Marines reprit son attaque pour s’emparer des derniers arpents du Bois de Belleau encore tenus par l’ennemi. A 7h00 du soir, quatre compagnies du 5 éme Régiment donnaient l’assault. Les allemands, fermement retranchés et appuyés par des mitrailleuses les repoussérent. Au prix de 104 nouvelles pertes et au terme de 5 heures de combat, les Marines se retrouvérent sur leur base de départ. Le 25 juin, ils attaquaient les bases de départ. La farouche résistance allemande s’effondra finalment devant la férocité de l’attaque. A 11h30 du soir, le Bois de Belleau état sous contrôle allié et accroché á jamais dans l’histoire de l’US Marine Corps.
