USS Guam and Trenton memorial

On the esplanade between the Mirador de Colom and the customs building at the Port of Barcelona.
Monument
A white marble stele with the names of the dead inscribed on each side. The front of the stele contains a bronze sculpture with the US Navy and USMC insignias and the below listed english text. The stele is the base of a wrought iron metal sculpture by Gabriel Alabert. The memorial commemorates the tragic evening of 17 Jan 1977, where a liberty boat carrying over 100 US sailors and Marines from the USS Trenton and USS Guam was run into by the Basque freighter Urlea, destroying the small boat and hurling the servicemembers into the harbor. Many were rescued but 49 perished. Monument was inaugurated on 18 January 1978.
Monument Text:
In memory of the members of the US Navy and US Marine Corps serving on the USS Guam and the USS Trenton who perished in this port on 17 January 1977. In gratitude to the citizens, officials, and rescue teams of Barcelona for their cooperation with the US Forces.
