Bob Dole Plaque (85th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division)

Details:

The location is marked by a sign directing you into the woods.  The plaque is located near the electricity transmission tower. It hangs on a tree. Plaque A metal plaque hanging on a tree marks the spot where Senator Bob Dole was wounded by machine gun fire in April 1945 during the attack on Hill 913 outside Castel d'Aiano, Italy.


Bob Dole served in the 3rd Battalion, 85th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division.

The text on the plaque is written in English and Italian.  The English reads:

 

CASTEL D’ AIANO

 

14 aprile 1995

 

ON THIS SITE, THEATER OF THE ATROCITIES OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR,

LIEUTENANT ROBERT DOLE MEMBER OF THE 10TH MOUNTAIN DIVISION, WAS SEVERELY WOUNDED WHILE FIGHTING FOR THE FREEDOM OF OUR TOWN.

THE CITIZENS OF CASTEL D’ AIANO, AS A TOKEN OF THEIR ETERNAL GRATITUDE, DEDICATE THIS PLAQUE IN RECOGNITION OF HIS VALOR AND THE SACRIFICES OF ALL THE SOLDIERS AND CIVILIANS WHO FELL FIGHTING FOR FREEDOM
