From the American Air Museum in Britian website:
While flying a combat mission aboard P-38 tail #44-23172 of the 479th Fighter Group, 436th Fighter Squadron on July 24, 1944, while engaging enemy fire, his wingman broke formation and collided with his 'Lightning' over Irai, France.
He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
